The National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security have  designated George Mason University as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education and a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research.


$4 Million Awarded to CARE for "Moving Target" Research
CARE researchers recently landed about $4 million in grants from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop a "moving target" defense against distributed denial-of-service attacks. A George Mason News article offered details about the funding and the innovative defense.

IEEE Computer Magazine Features CARE Research
A team of CARE researchers had their innovative distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) defense published in the March 2016 issue of IEEE Computer Magazine, which has a circulation of more than 60,000.

In the article, Angelos Stavrou, Dan Fleck and Constantino Kolias proposed a "moving-target" defense against distributed denial-of-service attacks. The defense works by repeatedly shuffling client-to-server assignments to identify and eventually quarantine malicious clients.
